What is craps?

Craps is a dice game that you can play at online casinos. In simple terms, the objective is to successfully bet on what number two dice will roll.

Rounds of standard craps consist of two parts: the come-out and the point. The come-out is the first dice throw of the round. If it’s 7 or 11, this is called a natural and if it’s 2, 3 or 12, this is known as crapping out. In both instances, the round ends here. If any other number is rolled, this becomes the point number. The round then continues until either the point or a seven is rolled.

Craps comes in multiple variants, and it’s also available in both RNG and live formats. It’s a popular game with gamblers due to the numerous bet options and quick and exciting gameplay it offers.

Popular online craps variations

There are numerous versions of craps you can play, which feature different tweaks to the rules. Here is a run-through of the most common you’ll come across:

Simplified craps

Simplified craps removes the come-out and point elements and your bet wins or loses on the initial roll. You win if the two dice roll 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12, and lose if they roll a 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. This variant comes with a favourable 2.80% house edge.

Crapless craps

As the name suggests, you can’t crap out in crapless craps. Instead, if you roll a 2, 3 or 12, this is considered a point, after which you must roll the dice again and hit the same number, as in standard craps.

High point craps

High point craps offers even money payouts on winning bets. It also ignores initial rolls of 2 or 3, while rolls of 11 and 12 win automatically.

New York craps

In New York craps, you must wager on specific sequences of numbers, such as 4 to 6 or 8 to 10. It also often features a different table layout to standard craps.

Diceless craps

Diceless craps works in the same way as standard craps, expect numbers are determined by randomly selected cards from a shuffled deck as opposed to dice being rolled.

Die Rich craps

Die Rich craps is a relatively new variant in which only one dice is used instead of two. As a result, the potential outcomes are reduced to 1 to 6. Most of the time, bets automatically win if a 6 is rolled, and lose if a 1 comes up.

Live craps

As with other live casino games, live craps is overseen by an actual croupier from a professional studio, with the action streamed in real time. You can play live versions of several craps variants.

Tips for winning at craps

As a game that relies on dice, there is a natural element of chance to craps, which means that no strategy can guarantee a win. However, by following these tips, you can help extend your bankroll and improve your odds:

  • Practise for free: Craps is arguably more complicated than other popular table games like roulette and blackjack. If you’re new to it, try out free casino games first to get a feel for it before wagering real money.

  • Play high RTP titles: With numerous craps variants available, an easy way to give yourself a better chance of winning is by playing those with a higher return to player (RTP) rate, as these are expected to pay out more money on average.

  • Use casino bonuses: Casino bonuses can give you more money to play with, allowing you to play for longer periods and/or place larger bets.

  • Place safer bets: Don’t forget that you can assess the odds and payouts for common bet types to see which have the most favourable house edge.
